National Grid

“Given the size and complexity of our business, particularly following our merger,
hy-phen has provided a high level and professional service.  The eRecruitment application has been instrumental in providing accurate information across all disciplines… the professional and pro-active approach of the hyphen team is particularly gratifying.”

Karen Lawrence, Head of IS Finance

National Grid is a leading international energy infrastructure business and the largest utility in the UK.  It owns and operates more than half of Britain's gas transportation network, delivering gas to around 11 million homes, offices and factories.  Through National Grid Electricity Transmission plc, the company operates the high-voltage electricity transmission network across Great Britain, and owns the network in England and Wales.

hyphen has worked with National Grid since 2001, when, following a sourcing programme with the objectives of reducing the cost of contract and temporary labour whilst maintaining or improving quality, hyphen was selected to provide a vendor neutral Managed Service Programme.  Key elements of the hyphen solution were:

  • An onsite Managed Service Programme that would take control of all recruitment processes for contract and temporary labour, providing a greater level of support and impartial advice to hiring managers, and delivering improvements to a number of key processes.
  • Deployment of a leading eRecruitment application to provide a standardised recruitment process, vacancy tracking, progress updates and significant improvements in management information.
  • A re-engineered supply chain that would fulfil all of National Grid’s contingent hiring needs for IT, technical, engineering and finance staff.
  • Active management of pay rates linked to a ‘gain share’ risk and reward financial model that would enable both National Grid and hy-phen to share in the cost savings that were generated.

During 2003 National Grid merged with Transco and the scope of hy-phen’s services was expanded to include the new ‘National Grid Transco’ group.  Our agreement has subsequently been extended and continues to evolve.  In 2005 the programme was short-listed for the ‘Recruiter Awards’ Managed Service Programme of the year award.  National Grid supported the entry on the basis that:

  • The solution has met or exceeded all of the objectives set at the outset of the programme including effective implementation of services and eRecruitment technology in all parts of the National Grid business, full business integration and achievement of cost savings targets.
  • Both hyphen and the solution have been flexible to the changing needs of the National Grid business
  • hyphen continues to deliver high quality services but is also able to offer value-adding services including specific recruitment projects and alternative resourcing solutions.
